Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP or Voice over IP), is the technology that allows voice telephone calls to made across data connections (broadband or VPNs) , rather than via a conventional, analogue or ISDN telephone line. |
VOIP calls are used for various reasons
Companies may look at VOIP connectivity between multiple offices rather than having to contact them via the normal channels of ringing their external number. This also gives added benefits to that of call cost savings, such as extension dialling, utilisation of staff in ringing groups regardless of location |
Companies may look at utilising VOIP to provide a telephone at a remote workers house which uses their broadband connection and allows them to be contacted by ext number, ring out to external numbers using the company lines and be part of ringing groups to answer incoming calls |
Companies may look at a remote worker having software on their laptop, with the use of a usb handset which will allow them to be both contactable and productive in being to carry out much needed telephone conversation when out on the road or staying in hotels etc |
21st century lines (also a format of VOIP). In the next few years, even residential lines supplied by some of the country’s biggest line providers, will be presented in this manner. Businesses are already benefitting from such presentation by huge reductions in line rentals, installation costs, and call charges. It offers greater flexibility and uniquely to VOIP lines as incoming and outgoing calls are routed, they offer the use of non-geographic numbers (the number your customers will ring or the number you display when dialling out, does not have use the same STD code as where the call is answered or made from) |
In summary
Voice Over IP is a great way to obtain flexibility whilst maintaining low running costs |
